Self-Care or Self-Isolation?
Examining the Increasing Individualistic Culture of Gen Z

Presented by: Rebekah Perkins, Baylor University

Date: June 26 at 1pm

Where: tx.ag/bestofprogram1 (Zoom)

We’ve all heard it: “I’m protecting my peace,” “I don’t have the capacity,” or “I’m prioritizing self-care.” These phrases echo through residence halls, often as students cancel plans, skip events, or disappear behind closed doors. But what happens when boundary-setting becomes chronic avoidance? When self-care masks a slow drift into disconnection?

This session explores the rise of individualism and emotional hyper-independence in Gen Z through the lens of residence life. We’ll examine the cultural and psychological shifts behind students’ retreat into isolation, and discuss how to discern between true self-care and emotionally driven self-protection.

The SWACUHO Best Of Series offer a chance to catch the top conference programs you may have missed! Join us on Zoom as award-winning presenters from our annual conference bring their sessions back for an encore.
