We’ve all heard it: “I’m protecting my peace,” “I don’t have the capacity,” or “I’m prioritizing self-care.” These phrases echo through residence halls, often as students cancel plans, skip events, or disappear behind closed doors. But what happens when boundary-setting becomes chronic avoidance? When self-care masks a slow drift into disconnection?
This session explores the rise of individualism and emotional hyper-independence in Gen Z through the lens of residence life. We’ll examine the cultural and psychological shifts behind students’ retreat into isolation, and discuss how to discern between true self-care and emotionally driven self-protection.
